Project Overview

Mistri is Nepal’s go-to on-demand home service app designed to bridge the gap caused by a labor shortage and increase access to reliable, affordable home maintenance services. The app connects users with vetted electricians, plumbers, cleaners, and other skilled technicians through a seamless digital platform tailored to Nepal’s unique market and user needs.

The Challenge

Nepal faces a growing shortage of skilled labor due to increasing labor migration, which limits availability of on-demand professional services. Many skilled workers prefer stable, long-term jobs, hindering access to quick repair and maintenance help. Additionally, low digital literacy and unfamiliarity with tech booking systems among workers and customers creates further barriers. Common customer frustrations include delays, inconsistent service quality, and opaque pricing, which undermine trust and convenience.

Solution Highlights

  • User-friendly design optimized for mobile usage habits and literacy levels in Nepal

  • Fast, simple booking process with transparent, upfront pricing

  • Verified, vetted technicians to ensure service reliability

  • Real-time service tracking for customer peace of mind

  • Robust review and rating system to build trust and accountability

  • Support for both cash and digital payments to maximize accessibility

Design Process

  • Discovery: Researched homeowner challenges and market gaps through user interviews and competitive analysis

  • Ideation: Developed information architecture, user flows, and low-fidelity wireframes focusing on simplicity and clarity

  • Creation: Designed high-fidelity wireframes for key screens such as booking journey, service packages, and notifications; established a consistent visual system with accessible typography and clear feedback cues

  • Measurement: Conducted usability testing which uncovered areas for improvement, especially in the service packages section, leading to targeted redesigns that enhanced user understanding and satisfaction

Results

  • Enabled quick, dependable access to essential home repair and cleaning services across Nepal

  • Improved transparency and trust through price clarity and technician verification

  • Enhanced overall user experience, supporting both tech-savvy and less digitally literate populations

  • Facilitated wider adoption by accommodating multiple payment methods

  • Supported growth of skilled service providers by providing a digital platform tailored to their needs

Key Takeaways

Mistri project taught the value of designing for emerging markets with diverse user capabilities and infrastructural challenges. The focus on transparency, trust, and simplicity proved critical for adoption and user satisfaction in a fast-growing but complex sector like on-demand home services in Nepal.
